This summer we have taken a handful of road trips with our kids–ages 6, 4 and 8 months.
Since this was a much shorter trip, I didn’t go all out like the post linked above. However, I did pull together a few things in one quick trip to the store that made our trip so much easier.
^^^ I call these Car Seat Kits.
What to include in Car Set Kit:
- Child-centered magazine for emergent readers. Our church has one. Highlights is another.
- Coloring book.
- New movie for the car DVD player.
- Sunglasses
- Water bottle (mini size) with the lid seal already broken.
- Goodie bag (like the ones you use for birthday parties)
- Crayon Roll (the brown and orange cylinder you see with stars on it.) This particular one was made by The Gilded Pear. You can see what it looks like rolled out here and here is a crayon roll tutorial.
Inside the Car Seat Kit goodie bag:
- Tic-tacs
- Small pack of gum
- Package of crackers
- Lollipops
- Fruit snacks
- Tootsie Rolls
- Box drink
- Stickers
- NO chocolate–it’s just too messy in the heat of summer
Sometimes I get all fancy and do a theme. The above trip was obviously Monsters centered–movie, stickers, fruit snacks, coloring book …you get the idea.
I put the Car Seat Kits together the night before and nestle them in their seats. While actually getting all packed and IN the car can be a stressful experience for a disorganized mom like me, hearing my kids squeals of delight makes these road trips worth it. Along with all the great memories we make. That is, until we get home and I have to clean out the car and do laundry but that’s a different post.
